I use a spare wheel mounted bike carrier. It works great and you can leave it on until you need to change a flat.

I have a hitch mounted carrier I bought at Walmart for like $100. I use my Yakima ski rack with it too but I found I needed a rubber strip to make the tube up to a 1" for the fittings. it works great but you r skis and boards will be dirty from the road spray. Even though it is much taller I prefer the roof to store them. I am thinking about how to do a side one of some sort on the roof rack.

I use a Yakima hitch rack for the bikes. It is the type that swings to the side. I picked it up at an REI garage sale as a return for $200. They cost $400+ new. Weel built but that is too much money in my book. Just before I found that I picked up an Allen spare tire rack for $80 (which I'm selling by the way). That was the only spare tire rack I found that carried 3 bikes. All of the others carry 2. The hitch rack is the only way to carry 4 bikes.

For the skis, I went with Thule Super High Feet, bars and a cargo box. Keeps everything clean and adds more carrying space. If you can't go any higher, then an adapter for the hitch rack is the way to go. Thule Hitch Mounted Bike Rack Ski Carrier Adapter Thule Ski and Snowboard Racks TH987XT If you are worried about the road salt on your board, you can get a cheap bag or pick up an industrial sized roll of saran wrap at a wholesale place and wrap uo the boards before you hit the road.

They also have suction cup mounts that you could probably attach to the side windows but they look a little sketchy to me. I think they only have them for skis anyway.

The first one I had was the Yakima "swing-away" type...sold it when I sold my first LR. I recently bought one from WallyWorld, Allen 4 bike tilt down. I dont like it, going to sell it. Over the weekend, I found out my cousin still has his old Land Rover swing away....going to get it....
