Thanks... not what I'd been led to believe from the Haynes manual, but I'll certainly give it a go. I admit it would make sense to have it in the same place.
Thanks, Discorama, for taking the time and trouble to reply... but I'm afraid I'm going to have to be a little sarcastic. 3 times I made the point that mine is the 'No Sunroof' body, and your pic is obviously a Sunroof one. There's plenty of manuals/videos where the unit location is shown for that body, but I can't find anywhere that shows it for MY body (which I understand is different in that small respect). I dropped the rear of the headlining and reached as far forward as the equivalent cross-strengthener, but couldn't find the receiver there. So where have they hidden it?
It's in the same spot, maybe it is missing. They use the same wiring harness, sunroof or not.
It is NOT at the same place for sunroofed or not BECAUSE on a not-sunroof vehicle you could not service/reach that receiver without removing the entire ceiling if it was mounted by the centre as in post #2. Being at the far rear on non-sunroofed models you can reach it without removing the whole ceiling.
On a sunroofed model, there is access to it if t is mounted centrally next to the rear sunroof as in post #2 without removing the entire ceiling.
Never seen a Haynes nor Chilton manual good to even wipe an ***.
READ again posts #6, #10 ! Says REAR headrests, pay attention ! Rear is third seat row !
If your "basic" model has no rear headrests mounted on ceiling, it is not my fault.
RIGHT... I'VE CRACKED IT!
Based on my experience this morning, I can confirm that the receiver IS in the same place, regardless of whether sunroofs are fitted. The confusion arises in the manuals, not because of a different position, but because of the different access routes needed to get to it. With a rear sunroof you don't have so far to go in, but with a non-sunroof body the job is bigger as you have to drop the whole of the rear part of the headliner... when I first did the job I didn't drop it far enough, and just feeling above it I only got as far as one strengthening rib where the interior light fixes, rather than the second one where the unit is bolted on.
The receiver is earthed via one fixing bolt — mine looked a bit rusty as though condensation had got to it, and possibly it wasn't making a reliable contact. Before fitting the new one I wire-brushed up the bolt, and coated it with copper grease to make a good connection.
I took some more pics, and will probably write it up in a bit more detail and put it on a web page, but not today… waiting for the sheep shearers to come! When the page is ready, with some tips like “wear latex gloves because the headlining contains glass fibre and little splinters stick in your hands”, I’ll post the URL here.
Thanks to everyone for your contributions.
Well, to @Externet 's credit, technically, in a world where auto companies thought in a manner in which future ease of access for maintenance was more important than an additional dollar for a different wiring harness, he's not wrong,. However, in this case, Land Rover puts it in the same spot, every time, as they always have done and always will do. Until they change it on the last model year of every model.
