Whine in 2001 Discovery
I have a loud whining noise in my 2001 Discovery. I am a new owner. It is loud when starting cold and diminishes in loudness as the car warms or at least seems to be because of warming. There is leak in Power Steering and turning does seem to affect sound. Seems to drive fine except ocassionally you get a popping sound on turning. Had a mechanic check it over and he found nothing wrong except the leak. Is that a normal whine or not?
I have an '03 disco and mine does the same thing. It is some sort pollution control pump that is going bad. Mine has been doing this for 2.5 years and still hasn't died. Sounds like a turbine car though.
There are no pollution control pumps on a Disco.
Both of you might consider changing your fluid with a completr p/s flush and replace the old fluid with a synthetic like Vavoline.

I've noticed somewhat of a whine when first driving my truckever since I bought it. I never thought too much about it because it doesn't sound like anything harmful, it almost sounds kind of cool.I thought about asking here but forgot. Now that I think about it, it sounds like the whine that fuel injection can sometimes make.

On my 01 Disco the aux fans kick on when first starting up in the morning or in the evening after it has been parked all day during work, and will go off after a bit (about5 blocks). I think there was another post regarding this about 3 weeks ago.
