You've made no mention of the location of the whine or the specific speeds at which it occurs.

Within a year after I got my DII (already at 145k miles) I switched all fluids to synthetic.. and maybe just me paying more attention or what but I noticed the a high speed whine at around 45mph and again at 65+ mph.

Direct center console, possibly slightly forward.. this type of whine can only be generated by a certain cut of gear and not a bearing as w/ a driveshaft or bearing, this limits it to t-case or transmission (possibly diff but location seems unlikely, for my noise at least..)

I'd say probably transfer case, however I would ALSO say that there's probably nothing to be worried about.. again depending on the cut, gears just whine.

To the O.P.
I have to agree with the above statements.

1.) There is no mention or indication offered to where you hear the whine. Next time you hear it try to listen closely and see if you can pinpoint an approximate location then, let us know.

2.) some whines are considered normal. It's the nature of the beast.

Default Whine

I think I will drop the front drive shaft and take it for a test drive and see if the whine goes away. Prosses of elimination.

That's a good plan. You do have a CDL correct?

Could be the Alternator, mine developed a whine that came across in the speakers and radio. also the lights would flicker a bit on occasion. replacing the alternator took care of it.

That and duct tape for the wife's mouth.. (JK)

Are you familiar with the mechanics of a center differential lock? If not, run a search there's plenty of info on here detailing it's inter workings. Yes, believe the hype, you can climb a wall.

After you pull the front driveshaft you're gonna wanna engage the locker on the center differential and take her for a spin around the 'hood. If the chirping is not present, you more than likely located the culprit. A faulty Propshaft.

A great source for new prop shafts is Lucky8, LLC. They have rebuilt OEM's and heavy duty Boulder pulverizing shafts.
