Whining Noise from Engine. Unable to Isolate
Re: '03 Discovery 2
I had a minor implosion of my water pump resulting in some repairs preventative maintenance. I just got finished with replacement of most of the ancillaries in the front of the motor.
Components replaced:
- Water pump and gasket
- Front cover, oil pump and gasket
- Timing chain
- Radiator and hoses with complete system flush
- PAS Pump
- Serpentine belt
- Belt Tensioner Pulley
- Cooling Fan
- Sump gasket
After completion of project, engine sounded fine for a day then developed a loud whine consistent with engine speed. Initially sound seemed isolated to alternator.
Alternator was replaced as a precaution but whine continues. Idler Pulleys were not replaced but it does not sound like a squeaky pulley noise.
Sound does not seem to be coming from the AC compressor. A/C works fine and does not impact noise volume, speed or intensity. I still cannot isolate problem. Anyone have thoughts on where this might be coming from?
Thanks,

I usually have a 3 foot piece of metal with me when I am chasing down noises in the engine bay. Place one end at different spots then put your ear on the other end. Move it around to narrow down the source.
Dont get caught in moving parts.

Try squeezing some grease into the idler pulleys while the engine isn't running, taking care not to get it near the belt. If the whine changes in character after you start the engine, it's likely that the pulley(s) are the cause. No change doesn't mean that the pulley is NOT the cause, however.

Good trick, will attempt. Also exceptional advice about not being dismembered!

Oh I forgot to mention I changed out the Tensioner as well. Could this noise be a result of added tension on the serpentine?
