You got a long way to go BigSky a long ways. But i am interested to see your swap & glad to see your making progress. You should go ahead and remove the rest of whats left in there and repaint that compartment before the install.

Anyone ever try a Magic Eraser on the engine bay? I'm willing to bet its the safest and most precise way of cleaning and detailing ALL components in the engine bay. Just lightly damp the magic eraser and ensure most of the loose water is squeezed out before you use it to scrub any electrical surfaces. Works great on rims, interior components, household, dishes, walls, floors etc. I currently work for a commercial cleaning company and these things are fuc*king amazing! I stand behind them 100%! Go for the extra strength pads if any of you ever consider using this product. I'll be using these on my 2004 Disco this late November - I'll take before and after pics for everyone.

Here is my engine compartment.
2001 Discovery II. 99000 miles or so.

Note the little spark plug boots.
Got those from NAPA auto.
Pretty geeky huh?

Supposedly these will reject heat from melting or damaging the rubber part on the spark plug..

Method to clean -
Can of GUNK engine cleaner.

Self spray high pressure car wash - on SOAP mode.

Then a can of 3M engine cleaner and repeat the spray on Soap mode.

J-Just the soap mode, not with actual soap or Gunk right? I guess it's a little less pressure?

Hey jfall, when cleaning and spraying the 3m engine cleaner, should I avoid any areas with the water/soap, engine cleaner? Or can I spray everything down? Engine looks great! Oh I noticed you were missing your pollen filter....

HI Guys,
Well, thanks for the catch for the pollen filter..
And, I don't know what that round thing is on the air intake..
Looks pregnant.
Mike or Savannah may know..

I had a few questions on how I cleaned this thing.

Here is some more detail (probably too much)

Get a can of GUNK engine cleaner - the one that foams.

Get a can of 3M engine cleaner.

Go to a self wash car wash with the high pressure wands.

There are two soap modes.
One soap mode is for a soapy brush and low pressure (X)
Don't use that one.

The other soap mode blasts out high PSI soap. That's the one you want.

Let the engine cool about 10 minutes with the hood open.
Then spray the GUNK engine foam at all the greasy spots.
Get it way down into the water pump area, on all the greased up plastic parts.

All over the aluminum parts and on the inner body walls

Then just go to SOAP high pressure and get it all off.

-----
Come back another day and use the 3M cleaner - the same way.
There will be parts you missed..

-----

I cleaned the engine at the car wash on Araphoe Blvd in Boulder - near the golf course - east of Foothills.
Has the correct sprayer and takes about $3.50 in quarters.

Truck probably had 96,700 miles it.
Has about 99,000 on it now and after a drive from Boulder to Seattle
I have not cleaned the engine.
That is just how it was from Boulder.
There is dust on some of the surfaces as you can see in the video.

I started to clean the engine after the heads were done in the parking lot at work. (well, after work hours).

The camera is a Kodak Z990 on 1080p mode.
If you go into youtube and look up moviestudioland
you can see the video in 1080p HDTV hidef.

I am not sure how well this Discovery is doing.
The aux fan came on last night for no good reason. But, the engine
must have been hot...

Oh well. I don't drive it much now.
When I get a job again I will be driving it.

We are lucky to have all of each other to help
and that all of us together - understand different things about the D2's.
And, that as one - we all know a lot together.

It was fun to fix this Discovery 2.
I have a Discovery I still. And that Discovery I goes out every day
and is approaching 167,000 miles.

Thanks for commenting on the engine.
I appreciate it.
Hopefully it will keep running as well as it looks....
I got lucky with this Disco as it had head gasket problems,
an O2 problem and that's it.

I still have a drive train balance problem But, oh well.
I will keep learning on that one.
