Default Why so many problems?

Hey folks!

I must say that I am a big fan of LR. I don't know what it is but I just think they are the greatest. No car is more sexy or badass than a Land Rover.

I own my third LR Discovery... second on that is a DII. My dad is encouraging me to get rid of it but it's my baby.

Right now, I recently replaced the radiator because it was leaking and was always leaving me on the side of the road to let it cool down. Well, not it was running hot again. Yesterday I was putting water in it only to find the more I put in the more that was falling to the ground. A lower radiator hose was completely cut. From what I could find on atlanticbritish.com it is the thermostat to water pump hose, costing about 75 bucks. No big deal, after that I won't have any overheating issues come up (fingers crossed).

The rear air suspension apparently has a leak, the Rover sits a little lower in the back than most. And apparently the pump constantly runs according to a Land Rover mechanic when I got my oil changed. He said it wasn't anything curcial, but should be corrected... only for about 1k bucks... or for 200 bucks i could convert it to spring. Any advice on that? Leave it the way it is or convert to spring? It does not sit really low, if you don't know Land Rover then it may look normal. Me knowing what looks normal I can spot it. Could it get any worse?

Next, the door lock. Apparently a locking mechanism (200 bucks +/-) broke in the door. So I never lock my car which is unsafe obviously. Could it simply be my key needs to be replaced or is this door lock issue common?

The remote control on the key broke and needs to be replaced. Before it broke, I would just double lock the doors with the remote control. If You were to pick, which would be better to correct, the remote control or the door lock itself? I think the same locking mechanism broke on the back passanger door too.

Next, the infamous "3 Amigos" have been on since the day I bought the car back in January. Can I leave it the with the ECU issue or does it need to be corrected?

I need brakes severely bad. The steering wheel shakes horribly when stopping, sometimes causing the 3 amigos to come on... maybe it is associated with the brakes needing to be replaced?

A quote on the brakes was 700 bucks. The door lock (whichever way I choose to repair will be between 200 and 400 bucks. The 3 amigos I plan to ignor. And the converiting to rear coil springs is about 300 bucks. All totaling about 1300 bucks. Is it worth the money or should I sell the car? I don't really have all the money to do these repairs, so what would you reccomend to prioritize and do first?

P.S. .... oh yeah! the front O2 sensors were just replaced, I am sure the rear ones need to be replaced too. About 128 bucks.

Thanks for your help guys. Any one of my questions you can help answer is greatly appreciated. Good to know there is a Land Rover family to turn to.

Are you in any way mechanical?
If you are you can cut that $1300 bill to less than half.

Personally I would dump the air ride and go to springs.
There is a little rod that works the door lock and it is not uncommon for it to break/come un hooked.
If it is unhooked it is free for you to fix, if it broke then a new $.05 rod will fix it.
As for the remote...your screwed, you have a DII. Remote of off e-bay is cheap but only the dealer can program it and they will rape you on that, over $100 for 5 min of "work".
Doing the brakes on a DII is a very easy job.
www.atlanticbritish.com, they have brake kits, everything you need to do a complete brake job, rotors and pads...everything.
The hardest part will be getting the tires off.
Your 3 amigos is caused by bad brakes, start with them and see if they go away.
When your 3 amigos are on you do NOT have ABS or traction control.

think of owning a land rover as dating a crazy minded supermodel,,,

great to look at and play with,,, but every now and then flies off the handle and goes to crazy town. you need to nurture and fix the little issues and when things are back to 100% it is the best make up sex ever,,,,

kind of the same thing,,,

i must like abuse cause my other vehicles are italian and my semi gal pal is a 22 year old psycho,,, but at 5'11 and blond i forgive the mental imbalances hahahahahaha

How much do you have in it?

Find out how much you can sell it for?

Add your repairs to the total invested. How long do you plan to own it. If you search for formulas in evaluating car costs/repairs you will see what I am talking about.

But if you are in love with the super model and you have to have it fix away. It is about what cash you have on hand also. I have fixed some cars in the past that my mechanic friend said I was nuts. But it gave me the time to get what I needed done financially.

If a local brake shop (the best for your buck) quoted me $700 for all the brake issues to be corrected, how much do you think I could do it myself? As far as the door lock, I will look into repairing it myself. Land Rover quoted me $200 for a new remote programmed and all. Yes, I think they are raping my wallet, however, everything with LR cost more. But for the most part it is worth it.

You can get all 4 rotors and pads shipped for $280 from roverguy.com. It only takes an afternoon to install new brakes. Then do a 1 quart brake fluid bleed. You need to take it to the dealer (or a shop with an ABS scanner) or buy an ABS amigo to get the brake faults read and cleared.

That depends on what ALL the brake issue are.
Personally I would do the work myself and see what happens, for $300 you have a 80% chance that will fix all of your brake problems.

Things for LR's are only more expensive if you take it to the dealer, any shop can work on your truck.
A LR is no different than a Ford or a Chevy, four wheels and a engine.
