Default will D1 locking snout work on D2 transfer case?

Finally getting around to trying to source a cdl for the rover. Will the locking snout off a d1 work? or do I need to source the snout off a 00-01? Also can the snout be changed in place or do I need to drop the transfer case out?
Thanks Jon.

As far as I know, the only difference is the output flange for the driveshaft. If you want to be most certain, contact Ashcroft Transmissions. Someone else on here may know as well.

They all have the same LT230 transfer case. I bought a used front output housing out of a '99 from Paul Grant and installed it on my 2003 non locking Disco. I think the flange was the same, but it's easy to swap.

It can be done with the transfer case in place, you'd have to work blind for some of the steps required. Removing the plate holding both the shifter and H-N-L lever would help tremendously so you can work on top of the transfer case. ****EDIT you'd have to remove it anyway so you can fit a lever that can actuate the locking mechanism***

I decided to remove the transfer case from under the truck and the biggest problem I encountered is I broke 4 out of 6 studs connecting the Y pipe to the exhaust manifolds. It turned out to be a major project drilling the studs and installing helicoils under the manifolds, but I wanted to remove the Y pipe anyway because I needed to replace one of the four O² sensors that had proved to be impossible to get out with the pipe in place.

Supposing you can get the Y pipe off without breaking anything, I'd say getting the transfer case out from under the truck is no big deal. If I wanted to replace the front output housing again, I'd still get the TC off the truck. But the difference is I know there's anti seize compound on all the nuts and bolts.

Thanks, great help. I may need to drop it anyway, Im pretty sure the input seal on the transfer case is leaking pretty good. Now was that a 99 d2 or d1 that yours came off of I was thinking they made both models that year. Also what linkage did you use to actuate yours?
Thanks

I am by no means an expert, but I understand that the LT230 transfer case has changed very little (relatively) throughout the years and I believe no significant changes affected the front output housing. That part of the transfer case is pretty basic, it's only a dog shifter and an additional dog gear (I took mine apart for a complete rebuild) and the changes mainly had to do with ratio and quieter gears elsewhere in the transfer case, but I am pretty sure that you could buy a front output housing from way back and it would bolt right on.

I bought a 1999 linkage mechanical linkage that came from the same donor as the front output housing, and tried to install it. The transmission on the 2003 is something like 2 inches longer that previously, so it did not fit right. I did not have time to make it fit, so I bought the Ashcroft lever which is quite expensive but beautifully made and completely bolt-on. Very easy install. I think some people have bought Chinese copies that worked well but no first hand experience. Also some people have successfully installed the earlier mechanical linkage by bending and modifying parts, but no experience there from me either.

Thanks for the info! I wonder if anyone has any luck with hooking up an electric actuator for engagment so it would be a push button to lock?

If it included the 04' cable actuated shifter its a great deal. If just the transfer case, a little high but not terrible.
