winch or locking diffs?
I think a 12K would work great on a Discovery. The question is whether the extra pulling power is worth the extra cost and weight. There's no such thing as too much winch provided you mount can handle the pulling power.
Are you more likely to get stuck, or to need to pull out someone who's stuck? If you're getting stuck, CDL or lockers may help, if you want to be a hero a winch works better (tho IMO a properly used ****** strap works even better, quicker cleaner and a lot cheaper). I've never had and never needed a winch, but the CDL does help with sand.
If getting stuck hasn't been an issue for you, get a SMALL lift instead, will make it more clearance, and save the rest for new tires.

Save your check, get the CDL linkage set up.
If you go to a winch/bumper, you will also need a lift to handle the weight.
If you go with a locker, you'll need at least rear axles and tires to justify the lockers.
Sounds like you really don't have the money for either yet so wait on this decision.

I agree with Mike here. I just went with an integrated kit from Dap-Inc for my winch and I have the CDL setup with a DI linkage. I say then go for the winch cause you can always pull yourself and help others too cause we all go out to have fun and it would not be fun to leave others behind.

A side thought for all you people who promote 12,000 winches, take a look on their specs especially the amperage required at different weights of pull. Most peoples trucks can't even come close to the electrical needs on that big a winch, so it is a wasted expense and when the winch doesn' t get enough amperage the winch motor over heats.
My HSI 9500 Warn winch gets withing 40 amps of its 450 plus requirements, because of a slightly stronger alternator and running dual Yellow tops together.
My hardest/longest pull was 11 Rovers up a pretty steep, off camber snow packed hill over an hours period of time, neither my batteries or the winch ever got over heated.
