I heard once about a D1 not shifting out of park due to the brake lights not functioning. I remember something about the owner trying to wire up trailer lights and they shorted out the brake lights and all the wiring associated with turning indicators and brakes. Soon as they fixed the brake lights and replaced the crispy wiring, it shifted right outta park.

Jump in your Disco, start it up and put your foot on the brakes. Do they light up? Turn on your blinkers too, do they work?

brake switch. make sure your lights come on. If they work, there is a solenoid that locks out the shifter until you hit the brakes. Make sure all of your fuses are ok, then look towards the solenoid.

If this is your only vehicle, get back to me and I'll show you how to start the truck and at least go get a new brake switch.

Hey folks. Sorta same issue here. I'm not getting any brake lights. I suspect the switch but one thing puzzles me.Whne I hit the brake pedal the red light on the dashboard lights up. Wouldn't the switch need to work for that to light up?

I was about 200 miles from home when this happened. So I ended up pulling the cover off the shifter, yanking the **** off, and pushing the rod for the solenoid in manually so I could drive home with no brake lights. I turned my lights on and hit the rear fog light button every time I stopped..so it at least sorta looked like I had brake lights. Any thoughts or suggestions?

First check your brake fluid, top it off if it is low, with DOT4.
Then replace your brake switch and you should be fine.
