Won't Start after Head Gasket Job
Hi everybody,
I'm new to Land Rover stuff, but so far I like it. I bought an '01 Discovery II with a blown head as a project to do over Christmas break. The body and interior are in great shape and I enjoy projects so overall, I figured it'd be fun.
Anyway, I did a standard head gasket job and it seemed to come back together fine until "the moment of truth." I tried to start it and the battery was bad so it had gone dead... I took it to AutoZone to have them charge and test it for me, and when I went back an hour later, they did confirm it was not holding the charge and was dying (partially bad). I tried it out and it did crank the engine a little, but died quickly, so I bought a new one. But now, trying it again the new battery cranks the engine fine, it sounds smooth but it also sounds like the engine is not getting gas at all. So, I grabbed my gas cans (I just have a couple small ones), got some gas (premium, as per what the gas cover says to use) and put 3 gallons in but... no change.
So any suggestions on next steps on this project. I'm at a little bit of a loss. I've cranked the engine enough to pull the gas I would think, but I'm wondering if it could be a fuel pump issue or something like that which I've never had to deal with. Please help!
Thanks,
-Alma

thanks for the input guys. I'll try the inertia switch. My Chevy I'm used to working on is a little older and doesn't even have an inertia switch so I didn't even think of that. If that doesn't work, spark sounds like a great idea (that I probably should've tried already but haven't).
On starting pre-HG job, technically no, not when I bought it. When I got it in late Dec it had been sitting for about 2 years after the HG blew. The guy I bought it from told me he thought it had run out of gas because it would start after the blow but then just stopped. It would crank, but not start (kind of like what I'm experiencing). The gas gauge said about 1/3 tank and after I added 3 gals to make sure it wasn't empty and it didn't seem to move is when I started suspecting the fuel pump might be the issue, but the inertia switch makes a lot of sense now that I know what it is (after doing a little research on its function).
Thanks guys, I'll have some time to take a look at it tomorrow and keep ya posted.

Also the security system could be immobilizing the truck due to the battery issue and long time off.
In addition from the info in the previous post it could be any number of other issues including the crank position sensor.
Read the codes now that you have a good battery. Might give you a few clues.
Good luck!

Okay, so I tried pushing the inertia switch and it did not change anything. I tried a few times and still nothing, so I tried unplugging it, which caused the flashers to come on (even when I tried resetting the alarm by locking and unlocking it) until I finally unplugged and re-connected the battery. I checked spark and it is giving spark on both sides of the V (I checked cylinders 1 and 4). I don't have a code reader, so any other suggestions? I am going to try the crankshaft position sensor.
Have you checked the pump relay fuse yet? Didn't notice you mentioning that in thread.
If told sitting for 2 years the gas is probably older than that. Adding 3 gal to say 8 of bad is still going to be marginal at best.
