Depends on if the misfire is head gasket related. Even if it was that's a $1200-2k quote at an indy mechanic.

I've never replaced a steering rod before but I'd do everything else for you for $400. It really is that easy. You should consider DIY on this and when you get it running again it'll be worth more than scrap money.

 

I'm not sure I'm following your logic here Mike. Are you saying just the major service? Because he's talking about needing a few parts.

1. Engine is misfiring on cylinders - Maybe coils, wires, HG.
2. Ignition wires need to be changed - I'm not sure, maybe $100? Not sure how much they go for.
3. Mass airflow sensor needs to be changed $150 at the least
4. Oxygen sensor needs to be changed -$80 or so each
5. Track rod and steering rod need to be changed $400 for parts I'm guessing
6. Also, the basic fluid change and fuel injection service - $100-300

New shaft- lowest $100-200 to rebuild, $300 for a new one.

 

The multiple misfire could easily be a symptom of the MAF and O2 sensors. I can't believe people would pay that match to fix those problems. No wonder why these get such a bad rap. I would never buy anything but a Honda or Toyota with a warranty if I couldn't turn a wrench. And people say doctors are overpaid and ripoffs. I think mechanics are the ones laughing to the bank.

 

If you can't wrench yourself, and want an honest opinion on what's wrong with your truck, and don't mind a drive to NYC, you should give British Auto Works in the Bronx a call.

They just did the head gaskets on my DII, they're a top notch shop to deal with. And this is coming from a guy who generally doesn't trust mechanics ever.

 

The mechanics aren't laughing on the way to the bank, the shop owners are.

 

9 Year old disco... Worth maybe two grand... Keep it and fix it...
Or sell it to me... I'll fly in with the parts, Fix it in your driveway in an hour or two and drive it back to Oklahoma...

He needs more than just your "major service".

the mechanics in the hamptons always want vehicles like this, they will "junk" it for the owner, turn around and sell it. it is his second car and it lseems like he really doesn't care much about it. if he did, it wouldn't be in that condition. as a former new yorker, i can tell you what it is like in the hamptons, it's his away car. the longest trip is probably from his house to the club and back. maybe to the beach. no way is it driving 85+ miles into the city. if he really isn't that mechanically inclined, let him donate it for a tax refund. sorry, but i'm a jaded new yorker. hopefully there is no offense taken to my sense of humor.

 

Maybe he can contact a local enthusiast to help him out with this. This could still be a very nice vehicle with some smart TLC. Sourcing those parts shouldn't be too bad and this truck could be back on the road for less than $500, even less if he bought a used MAF, or a cheaper wire/plug set.

Also to the OP, you said the truck started running bad all of the sudden? It's possible that you are in need of a tune up but if your truck suddenly started running like crap I would suspect the MAF first, then your plug wires. What engine codes were you getting?
