Exclamation XYZ switch removal fiasco

Hey all,

I ordered a used replacement XYZ switch to replace my faulty one (water from the ac drain got in) and went to swap them out today.

Firstly, it's virtually impossible to get to the two bolts holding the sensor in, no room to turn a ratchet so I ended up spending quite some time on my back with the old 10mm spanner, making little turns at a time.

But it all went from bad to worse when I went to remove the selector arm nut. About half way out it stripped and just turns and turns. I can't get it off and I can't get it on.

I don't have the room to cut off the nut, and I'm afraid that if I cut the stud I might not be able to replace it.

Has anyone run into this? Any advice? I'm dead in the water until I find a fix.

Don't have one to eyeball, but the RAVE drawing seems to show that the threaded shaft actually has one (maybe two) flat sides. If so, any hope for small visegrips? Might have to use a Dremel with tiny cut off wheel for nut, then re-thread shaft.

that shaft goes inside the transmission underneath the valve body.

I don't think there is any way to get a dremel in there. I'd have to remove the shaft to rethread, and at that point I'd just replace it. assuming I don't have to drop the transmission to get it out.


I'm hoping mike chimes in with some brilliant idea...

You don't think you could clean up the threads on the shaft in place if nut was not there? Any way to use needle nose pliers or such to put lateral force on nut ( pry, etc.) , while turning, to "thread" on to the remaining section of rod? We have a gadget at the shop that you fit around a bolt, and tighten. It "cracks " or "splits" the bolt. Might compress yours enough to continue removal.

Yeah. I ordered a nut cracker last night from sears. I think it's my best bet. There is so little room between the trans and the trans tunnel.

If it was like mine its rusty as ****. I sprayed it down with pb for days. Did you get the nut

That one is harder because the cable is very soft and bends and snaps very easily. Let us know how you make out. You should read my thread on my xyz rebuild. Also reroute that ac drain.

Yes I got the tension nut off. Assuming I can break the rusty nut off the shaft I'm hoping I can get a new nylock nut on with the rebuilt xyz. I plan on waterproofing it as per your rebuild info. As for the drain, can I just stick a long tube in it?
