I wanted to point this out to him simply cause most people are not aware of the fact that you either install both the ECU and BCU from the same donor vehicle, so they can communicate when in the other vehicle or pay the big bucks to install just the BCU, tow it and have the dealer reprogram the replacement.

I'm in New York State, so a "check engine" light during annual inspection is a concern. The donor motor is in good shape, with a bit over 100,000 miles. The blown motor has never been apart, as far as I can tell, so I will take the heads off that one, and at least check for cracks and deck flatness. I'll see what they look like and maybe go through and do seals while they're off. I appreciate the consideration on swapping the boxes, but I think for future serviceability and parts identification, I'll go with maintaining the stock 2002 SAI configuration, as crappy as it is.
