Jastute, nice to hear someone on this forum give a vote for a P38. I really like my ‘97. In most ways they are better vehicles than Discos, but the Disco does need less maintenance. I really like both of them and I can’t see myself getting rid of either of them for a long time.

I had a 97 Range Rover 4.6L HSE Vitesse P38 in AA Yellow back in 2003-2005. Great vehicle and I only had a problem with a CV (my fault off roading when a wheel hopped and snapped the LF axle shaft/CV), and a height sensor. Besides that it was rock solid. It had 87K when I got it and nearly 190k when I sold it. Thing looked brand new inside and out and I regret selling it as it was truly unique. I had the Safety Devices Roof Rack, air damn and the suspension was tricked to be 2inches taller.

The Vitesse would be beautiful. Mines not a special edition but in great shape and a dream to drive both on and off road.

i love the P38. i bought it fairly well sorted from a member of DiscoWeb.

it has been low maintenance since i rebuilt the EAS block.

i plan on holding onto the 2000 P38 as long as possible. it's great for running around town and probably the most comfortable highway cruiser i've ever driven.

Edit: "fairly well sorted" is an understatement. the PO had done a really nice job refreshing and restoring it.

Mine was quite good cosmetically but the maintenance had been neglected. It took me over a year to sort out the EAS but it’s been excellent since.
Sorry to the OP I had no intention of hijacking this thread.

I still want the capability I have now, I don’t think the lr3 or 4 have the same capability unless you drop lots of coin.
You might want to read up on the 5 liters, probably the worst or 2nd worst JLR motor ever, and that is saying something.

Anything? '68 blazer with a 400/4 speed. Rust free, but a bit dented and scuffed. I'd spray it light blue with a white top (implement paint, of course. Can't get too fancy), black steel wheels, 33" tires. Detroit locker in the rear, spool in the front with manual hubs. 3.55 gears.

Attainable equivalent? Probably just a short bed '80s C10 with a 350 and some rust.

I will go with the Defender 110 or 130, diesel and manual. Main reason is most of my buddies in the BC Roverlander club run Defenders and are familiar with them. We go on runs in fairly remote areas. Any issues can most likely be fixed with the collective knowledge of folks in the group.

For example, we had just started the first day of four days in the bush. One of the D110s burned through its gound cable (something to do with a shorting of loose winch cable that caused it). The group was able to figure out a re-wiring idea and get him going for the rest of the four days.... though he needed to be tugged-towed to get started every morning.

Plus, my driverside window dropped and I could not bring it back up during the third day of wheeling. This is after I had just changed the same regulator and motor a couple of years ago. Therefore, a Defender with a little electrics as possible for remote wheeling.
