2004 Discovery won't start
Hello,
I hope someone can help. I've got a 2004 Discovery series II that I bought 6 years ago with only 24k on it. It goes through windshields (at around $1200.00 a pop) like grain through a goose but that isn't my current problem. My current problem is that the engine will not start. I pulled into a NAPA to get some motor oil and everything was running fine, no noises, nothing odd at all. Turned the engine off and went inside. When I came out the vehicle would not start, it acted like a dead battery. I had the guys at NAPA put a booster pack on the battery to see it it would start. No luck the engine turned very slowly for a bit then the started dissengaged. A little smoke came from the starter area. I had it towed. After hearing my story my brother was sure it was the starter even though I wasn't. He put on a new one before I had a chance to do any research. The result was the same the engine turned really slowly for a bit then the starter dissengaged. We noticed the sport and manual mode lights flashing. From what I could read in the internet that indicated a bad battery. I had it tested, and the battery was bad. Now with a brand new top of the line battery and a new starter it's doing exactly the same thing. The engine turns very slowly for a bit then the starter dissengages, the sport & manual mode lights are still flashing. I hate to bring it to the only dealer here in Maine it's 40 miles away to have it towed. Added to the distance is the cost, I've never been able to leave the dealer for less than $1000.00, and that time it was just a sensor. Thanks in advance for any ideas of where I should start looking for the problem.

even though you bought a new battery it may not be fully charge, american car a good with anything over 12 volts not true with LR has to be 13.5 volts.
have you tried starting it with a jumper as well as the new battery?
flashing light are usually, battery, ground or xyz switch

Thanks drowssap,
I've tried to jump it with a 12 volt tractor battery and that didn't seem to make a bit of difference. I'll give the ground a third look at but I've already given it a good going over twice. Is there any way of testing the xyz sensor? The dealer change the xyz sensor out about 3 years ago when the Brake, abs & traction control lights all came on. Don't they like that $1000 to $1200 fee at the service dept.

to follow up on the last suggestion you could remove the drive belt temporally and see if it will start. That would eliminate a seize ac compressor, water pump or power steering as the cause, I have seen all the of them at one time or another keep a car from cranking.
