The full set of all manuals on your truck is in the document called the RAVE, free download link in my signature.

The Freelander has an engine coolant temp sensor that is monitored directly by the ECU that also runs the engine. A signal is sent from ECU to instrument package that will place the needle at mid point under normal operation. Could be a simple as sensor unplugged. Here are some pages from the RAVE to get you started, there is also some wiring associated with the instrument cluster in the RAVE.

Should also mention that a scanner or ultra gauge can be used to read the temp from the OBDII diagnostics port, the ECU sends this in digital form. If scanner sees it, then wiring issues are ECU to gauge (including dash cluster). So a $60 Ultra Gauge may be a cheap fix.
