Blower motor,i need help!

my 03 freelander heat and air stoped work for awhile it would work every now and then and it would smell like burning wires i took alook at the blower motor and it was covered in a red sticky stuff any ideas? i've look around for a new one and it seems most of what i have seen is around 400 bucks it looks like it would be easy to replace anyone have the same problem that can help?

also isthe 1.8 land rover td engine . There also 1.8 16 valve petrol which is pretty goog.

In general, the engine's greatest bugaboo is overheating which causes the heads to push the liners into the block. After that point, they will no longer seal, and cannot be made to seal, without restoring the liner deck height above the block. I have developed a way to lift the liners using a shim, but it is no small amount of work.
I've run the repaired engine hard and it is holding well after 10k miles.
