Default Bottom radiator hose cold

My 05 freelander overheats after about 40 minutes of idling. The top return hose that goes from engine to radiator is at running temp but the bottom hose is still cold. Is the radiator clogged or the water pump not working

You can make more diagnosis on the condition of the radiator by checking the temperature of the fins (not frame) from top to bottom in a vertical line, engine warmed up and off. More than 10F cooler at bottom indicates radiator sludged up. Aluminum radiators by Rover are a replace item, like a hose. Water pump would show up faster than 40 minutes.

Default radiator

i removed the radiator and water came out both fittings. I can see that it is a replacement already. My question is there a way to visually see if the radiator is stopped up or do i need to take it to a radiator shop to get it professionally done.

The type of radiator with plastic side tanks is usually too costly to repair vs outright replacement. A shop may be able to flush and evaluate it.

what could be the problem?

They refer to exhaust gas, allowed to seep into the cooling system by the bad head gaskets. This boils the coolant out of the container furiously. There is a chemical test to confirm this, does maybe 15 tests, about $60, changes color with products of combustion are "sniffed" in coolant.

Did you ever find the cause? My 02 has the same issue. Took of the radiator hoses and ran water through the radiator - runs through to bottom in a matter of seconds and drains completely so don't think radiator is the issue. Bottom hose is very cold - no coolant passing at all. Suspect the thermostat but looks like a real bear to replace.
