Question Flywheel type...Dual Mass or not?

The 2005 TD4 Freelander 1 engine is a BMW 2.00 Diesel but according to Haynes manual with a changed flyweel and different diesel fuel injection system. I guess the flywheel change is to do with the type of vehicle being heavier 4WD but this engine( also when used in the Rover 75 model) apparently had a dual mass flywheel.
Is the LandRover flywheel therefore NOT a dual mass type and is the clutch used the same whether a dual mass ot 'normal' flywheel?

What are the pros and cons of these dual mass flywheels?

see Dual Mass vs Single Mass FW

Dual Mass units are "tuned" to the application.

Default Fywheels

Are you saying then that maybe that same 2litre BM diesel engine could have three different types of flywheel fitted depending on whether it was in a BM saloon, a Rover saloon or a LR VFreelander?
Rather similar perhaps to them also changing(tailoring) the fuel injection system.

Can't say for that, but in general, the dual mass flywheels are designed to smooth out the diesel vibrations. In old Mercedes it rumbles so much the potentiometers that run the cruise control gnaw through the resistor tracks from the vibration. And in the NAS realm, few diesels are to be had, which is a shame.

Default Flywheels - dual mass

Thanks for that. I have found a good picture with some 'commentary' that does show me what they are and bascially how they work. I can see from this why you say what you say about them. I am still however non the further forward as to whether the FD4 engine has one. If I look at those pictures and listen to the audio with it and then look at the Haynes manual pictures of a LR F1 flywheel( not that they are that clear) then it would seem it IS NOT a dual mass yet I would have thought from the vehicle weight types/combined with what you say then it should be a dual mass.
I am obviously doomed at this stage not to get and answer. maybe it is time to phone the Land Rover spares dept and try to enquire there:-)

That, or download the manual from Land Rover (there may be a fee). There are Freelanders on our copy of the RAVE, not sure to what year.
