Help please! Intermittent engine smoke
My 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 belches oily smoke from the engine compartment, but only very intermittently. When I open the bonnet and rev the engine I can't tell where it is coming from. Then the problem goes away for a couple of months or more, and then it comes back again. I've twice had Land Rover service the vehicle and have hoped they would pick up and cure the fault, but they haven't. Each occasion the vehicle has gone in, the fault has not been occurring. But now, for about the tenth time in two years it is back again. What is it likely to be? Should I just wait for it to go away again? If it's a gasket going, could it be serious and how can it be so intermittent?
Apparently cracked turbos are a common issue. The vehicle does go into a reduced performance mode. I'm not certain you'll be stranded. Also, the LR solution is to replace the turbo, but many independant shops weld the crack.
