Default Repair or Cut My Losses?

It is decision time with my 2003 Freelander. The timing belt change is due. If I buy the parts myself (belts, water pump, thermostat assy) my total bil will be just under $2,000.00. If that was all I had to do, I would have the work done. But, I have a few other concerns.

The rear end makes a lot of noise like the axles and wheel bearings need replaced (at least the left side if not both sides).

The parts guy could help me find the part number of the pvc tubes that make up the breather assembly...mine are broken.

After replacing both VIS motors, I still get a a 1472 and 1475 code fault (running rich both banks). I worry the intake manifold is trash.

No matter what, I intent to ask the shop to pressure check the coolant system first. I suspect it is hiding coolant somewhere.

After searching the internet, I can get a replacement engine with less than 40K for under $4000.00.

So, my question is: do I fix the car or cut my losses?

This Freelander has been a huge disappointment. Don't get me wrong, I have owned expensive imports. My garage houses my second Saab 9-3 SE. And I own an airplane....so I understand it cost money to keep nice things running. I just hate to throw good money after bad.

Yesterday, I called Atlantic British and ordered parts to replace the timing belts, thermostat and water pump. I local import shop will do the work. Turns out, they just finished a Freelander that had the tension pulley fail. Between buying the parts myself and using a local shop instead of the dealership, I saved money.

I'd like to hear more about installing a different intake system to eliminate the OEM intake.
