Default 02 P38 RR oil cap gasket question

Just the other day I went to check the oil and wanted to add some since it needed just a small amount. When I went to unscrew the oil cap I noticed it had a foam gasket which tore when I removed the cap. I called the stealerships in the area and they said this gasket was needed to keep the right amount of oil pressure.

Have any of you noticed this gasket and do you believe the truck can run effectively without it until I can get it replaced? Is the stealership speaking the truth? The oil cap fits nice and tight even without this foam gasket. Any comments are welcome.

P.S. Happy New Year fellow Range Rover enthusiasts!

huh that is a good question. I am willing to bet that the loss in pressure is not that great enough to cause any damage. Also if you are really worried you can get some gasket material from any auto store and try to make it work. I really do not know the answer but I know I have run the engine with the oil cap off in the drive and have not noticed anything detrimental.

I think that is 100% bull. The crank cases are ventilated on these things (as with almost all internal combustion engines) so they don't build up any significant pressure. It scares me to think how much oil these trucks would leak if the cases were under any kind of pressure. Probably couldn't drive to the end of my driveway before my oil was all gone.

I agree with Krazz, I think they are just trying to sell you something.
