Default 2001 Transmission Slipping - Is it dead.

While driving today, the vehicle randomly started revving up to about 3/3500 rpm while going about 50+ mph. It was happening intermittently then go progressively worse as I reached my destination, about an 80 mile trip.

It was slow to shift gears and I had a hard time getting over 50 mph. I did not have any issue accelerating from a dead stop. First and second gear seemed to be okay but it's 3/4 causing the issues. At least that's the way it feels.

Has the transmission kicked the bucket? Could it just be the fluid?

Should I try to limp it home to my shop and risk breaking something?

I'm new here so sorry for so many questions. Thanks, gentlemen.
