Default 2005 Range Rover HSE sucking oil

I have a problem that I suspect is collapsed hoses on the oil separator but am curious as to what other people think. A few months ago, all of the sudden intermittently a huge puff of smoke would come out the exhaust. Then nothing, no problem at all. Then a few days later, another huge puff of smoke out again. It is going through a quart every 3 to 4 hundred miles now and would go a couple of thousand before.




The engine idles perfectly, never misses a beat. It doesn't smoke at idle, but the periodically when I give it gas can really blow out a huge puff of smoke. Just sitting at idle there is nothing that comes out of the exhaust. Sometimes when taking off, the engine misses considerably until the smoke is cleared . I am sure the engine miss at that is oil on the plugs when they fire. After the smoke clears, everything is fine.


I had the Range Rover dealer run a compression restore through the system a while back to quiet down my vanos unit, that worked, but the oil problem is worse and I now have a shrieking sound. I believe the shrieking sound is from the collapsed hoses and PCV valve (oil separator valve) because when I remove the oil cap, the sound goes away. I also have a considerable amount of vacuum at the cap and it is very hard to get off with the engine running.


Lastly, when it is cold, it is pretty normal as long as I don't put many RPM's on the engine, but when it is warmed up and revved up for a while such as driving down the HiWay, it is worse.


Since my Rover idles perfectly, I don't suspect any leaks in my oil separator, but I suspect collapsed hoses. I suspect that when the engine is warm, the hoses are softer and with RPM's on the engine, the hoses then suck together and the little amount of room still left in them allows the oil to be sucked directly into the intake. But I am interested in what others think.


Assuming the PCV is largely mechanical, no diaphragm or anything like that, I don't need to replace it unless I brake something. So I am thinking about getting new hoses today and putting them on. Anyone have a link to the best method of doing so?
