Default Brake Job

Dealer has my 06 4.4 and says I need front and rear pads and rotors. $1400. Does that seem high, or is it just me?

That is insanely high!! Do it yourself. How many miles are on it? It the rotors are within spec and the surface is fine you can usually get away with just doing pads. You can also have the rotors turned once or twice to refinish them. The dealers always try to tel you that you need new rotors and such but that is rarely the case. You can do the whole job yourself for about $150. Its easy and can be done in a couple hours in your driveway.

I agree with krazzz, that's nuts for a brake job, even with changing all the rotors, pads, and the fluid.

Buy the parts from AB or Rovers North (or similar), and DIY in a few hours time.

If you are a little mechanical, do it yourself. First of all you probably don't need rotors, dealers love to sell them though and you can buy some high end Akebonno ceramic pads for around $180, they will last longer then OEM pads and don't leave any black dust.
Shout if you want some help with this.

Mike,
If you aren't comfortable doing the brakes yourself take the truck to an independent shop that you trust. Have them just replace the pads if thats all it needs and you should be out the door for less than $300. But really I think you can do it. It doesn't require any specialized tools and you can do it in your driveway on a Sat. afternoon. Get a repair manual and read up on it.

Needing Rotors depends on your stopping. Most of the time in the front you do need them cause you dish them out. Rears aren't so bad. But if you live a rust belt then do them anyway cause they will only get worse.

oh and buy the parts and bring them to the dealer to install. The shop doesn't lose out and does them right. Only the parts dept loses out. Trust me, the service dept never overcharges for labour. Its the part dept that makes the bill high.

I just had new front pads put on at Sears for $170 that included doing a brake fluid exchange.
