'Check Engine' Light
Hi,
I have a '97 4.0 Rover which has been running great. Tonight the 'Check Engine' message light came on but I cannot find any reference in the manual as to what to check. Can someone give me any clues before I go to the shop? Thanks[X(]

I was told that the check engine light automatically comes on at 85,000 miles - then you have to take it to the dealer for a service and re-set@!!!
It then comes on every 8 - 12000 or so miles there after. The dealer wants $102 for re-setting every time.(plus the service costs of course)
I noticed in another forum one of our New Zealand members was trying to work out which pins to jump on the serial port on the ECU.
Keep asking around - the news would be great for everyone.

Thanks for your info. This is what I found at http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdet...ngine.html#p38
1. Turn on the ignition.
2. There is a 5 pin (or so) connector in the lead from the display. It can be found by following the lead out of the display unit - it will be somewhere else under the seat. Disconnect the lead from the display unit at the connector, and after 10 secs reconnect the lead.
3. Turn off the ignition and wait until you hear the main relay click out. The next time you switch on the ignition the Check Engine light should be out.
Problem is there's so little space under the seat to look for the plug and I haven't figured out out to move the seat out of the way to access the plugs. If you have any clue how to do this. Thanks again.

First, before you start resetting things, is it your check engine light that is on or your maintance light that comes on every 80,000 miles or so, there is a difference.
If it is the check engine light, you need to go have the fault codes read and make whatever repairs are needed, then have the light reset.
