Default consider this HSE ?

There is a 99 HSE/4.6 not terribly far from me. I have not yet looked at it.

The price is $2500, down from $5500. 175k miles.

The seller, some sort of used dealer has excellent pics and the RR looks nice.

problem: transmission.

MECHANICALLY, THIS RANGE ROVER IS IN RUNNING CONDITION BUT SHOWS A SLOW MOVING TRANSMISSION AND NEEDS A SERVICE/ REPAIR BEFORE DAILY DRIVING

I own a 94' Volvo 850 and have gone through all of the idiosyncratic repairs involved with them.

From reading posts, it seems to be a similar situation. Nice vehicle to love if you can deal with the inherent problems.

question: t/c ?

I read here that the t/c costs can be near the price of a transmission. Is the t/c the most likely culprit or is there another item which would be more likely.

Is this even worth considering at all ?

thanks,
jack

Granted one can't get much of a car for $2500, I can't think of a bigger mistake than buying a 10 year old P38 with 175k miles on it with a known transmission problem. Why would you do that to yourself? Keep looking.

Slow moving transmission? It might just need a transmission filter and fluid change. It might also be the wrong type of fluid that is in there and maybe even a dirty MAF (sounds crazy but a dirty MAF can cause this). Its worth considering if it is something simple but, If it does require a rebuild... I'd pass.
