I recently picked up a 2005 L322 and last week it developed a noise when I turn the steering wheel. It sounds like a rubber friction type noise. It happens when turning both directions. It kind of sounds like a rubber bushing that gets pushed up against a metal shaft. I've sprayed lube on the engine compartment at all joints. Same problem.


I had it up on the lift today and it doesn't sound like its in the underneath but I cannot get a good ear on it to figure out where it comes from. My guess is somewhere in the bulkhead area?

Any ideas?

I thought of disconnecting the column shaft and see if I can isolate it as either in the interior through firewall or beyond the firewall to the axles? How difficult is that?

 

Before taking the shaft apart, etc., your idea of putting a good ear on it has merit. Use a stick or long screwdriver (or mechanic's stethoscope) to press against things and listen as it is turned. You hear things much better (try the alternator or valve covers as an example). May help narrow it down.
