Default How to tell '00 4.0 L vs. 4.6 L?

Guys - I'm getting a 4.6 L RR motor as a replacment for my Discovery. Is there a visual difference between the 4.0 L and 4.6 L out of a 2000 RR? I'm having the motor shipped from a salvage yard, and I want to make sure I'm getting the correct engine.

Thanks,
Bryan

There is no real visual difference between the 4.0 and 4.6 engines. The best way to ensure that the engine you're getting is the right one is to have the salvage yard to provide you with the engine number stamped on the block. When they provide you with the engine number, cross reference it with the engine codes shown in my attached image. That will tell you which engine it is. Hope that helps! Let us know how it turns out!

Oh yeah! To find the engine code, look just off to the left of where the oil dipstick enters the block, the engine code is stamped there.

Rockcity - you rock. Thanks for the info. I'll post back when I get the engine.

Thanks, but it'd probably be in your best interests to reference the number BEFORE you get the engine. If it's not correct, saves you the trouble of fighting the salvage yard and return shipping, etc. etc. If I were you, I'd call the yard and tell them to provide that number before they go shipping engines all ***** nilly.

If it is a full motor out of the vehicle a good way to tell just by looking at it is the stamp on the intake manifold. I would be really surprised if they would swap that to sell a fake 4.6 but I guess it could happen.

Rob - where is the intake manifold stamp located? May be a dumb question, but I don't think I've noticed it before.

Well if it is a GEMS engine then it will have a stamp on top of the motor intake that says if it is a 4.0 or a 4.6, you cannot miss it. Since you are asking though I am assuming you have a Bosch motor as so then I think you need to look for the designation on the block and look it up. Sorry for the confusion.

Ahh, yes, definitely Bosch. I'll check the stamp number using Rockcity's sheet.
