the alt is charging at least, well, voltage any way, not nessacarily able to sustain loads. anyway, if it comes on at startup, it has nothing to do with it charging or not, it has to do with the signal it send. your wire, the small one, on the back of the alt is probably pinched somewhere, if they say its wiring, make them fix it, they were just playing with that entire harness by doing the intake.

Unhappy Alternator fault

Well, I took it back and they tested the alternator with the handheld computer set and it didn't do well, they said it was because I have a gell packed battery, so they rolled out the larger tester with the big meters and it passed with flying colors.

The alternator fault only comes on 1 out of 3 times, but only when you turn the key to the first on position, as soon as I start up the rover the alternator light fault goes away and my airbag fault stays on and does not cycle to another fault.

I can press the trip meter button once and the airbag fault will go away, at least that way I can see the daily miles. I would think that the airbag fault and the alternator fault would come back on while driving if they really were at fault.

The mechanic seems to think it could just be a glitch in the EMC.

Any thoughts?

Does the SRS light stay on as well and is there an audible tone with the airbag warning? The airbag fault might be a loose connection under the drivers seat. The SRS plug is notorious on P38s for coming loose and not completing the circuit causing the airbag warning and SRS light to illuminate. Might try taping it carefully using a tiny amount of glue just to get it to hold... seat movement or just jostling around can cause it to interrupt the circuit again.

For the alternator... battery voltage is fine. Have you cleaned the ground points? Tried replacing the cables? Could also check the connection to the BEcM and the plug under the coolant expansion bottle (which can corrode).

Regards

Thanks for this info, I will see what I can find under the seat tonight, as for the SRS red light, yes it is always on and flashes, but I have no audible sound.

Great information on this site. Thanks,

Default AirBag Fault Picture under the seat

Well, can someone tell me by this picture under the drivers side seat what wire to play with that might be part of the problem with the airbag fault?

Thanks for any help.

Well all the SRS stuff should be yellow but I forgot to mention it's really hard to see this plug. As in nearly impossible. You'll probably have to reach around a bit to find it.

Since I can't figure out how to post a picture here i'll pm one that might help.

Regards

Default Airbag Fault, SRS Light & Alternator Fault

I just bought a 1997 Range Rover 4.6 HSE with 106,000 miles that has the same 'Airbag Fault' message and SRS light on (constantly) that is mentioned here. Were you able to resolve it? If anyone can provide detailed instructions (I'm new to Range Rovers) on how to check the connectors under the seat, I'd appreciate it.

I also saw a message last evening that said 'Alternator Fault'. Any help on that would be much appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Congratulations on your recent purchase and welcome!

For the SRS/Airbag warning you're going to want to get a flashlight, raise the seat as high as it will go, and peak around under the seat until you find the SRS connector. It should look something like the picture i'm attaching (although this is a shot of a non-power seat so you may have a lot more cables running). When you find it, unplug it and try replugging it firmly. Turn on the vehicle and see if the lights are gone. If they are you might try leaving it alone and see if the warning message and light don't come back. If it does it may be time to tape, glue-very carefully!, or replace the plug. Sorry there aren't better instructions but the configuration of the plugs seems to vary a bit, not just from model year to model year either.

Alternator could be a number of things. Might want to do a search on testing the battery and alternator with a multimeter as a first step.
