Pre-purchase Wisdom
Looking for input, we're looking at a 2004 RR HSE (172k km=about 105K miles). From owners description it has a VANOS problem. We have a BMW X5 that had similar problem that I solved. Are there any other potential problems that should be checked a little more closely that are typical for that vintage and model. We are looking to haul this thing behind the motorhome to use in mild off road conditions. Current owner indicates he just put in new radiator and serviced cooling, transmission, and was advised his engine is pooched. I have had several Discos in the past so have some familiarity.
Why do they point to the vanos? I also bought a 2004 and owner said engine was toast. Turned out the timing guides and chain was toast!! All the plastic likes to fall off the guides leaving way too much chain slack that the tensioner can't take up. I did replace the guides and chain but did have t buy the kit to hold the camshaft a in time. I also rebuilt the vanos at the same time and also has to buy the special tools for that. Timing chain job is a big one, parts cost me about $1000 and took up many weekends. Vanos not that bad of a job but you need all the tools to rebuild and re-time them. Shop wanted about $5000 to do. Let me know if you want to borrow the tools or need any photos of what it looks like inside
Well I did the 4 hr return trip to Edmonton to look at it yesterday. It belongs to a 20 something arrogant kid. He didn't bother to tell me he had an onsite service guy come out to change oil and service the thing, and so he PO'd the service guy who promptly told him to shove it and he threw the drain plug under the car in the snow and left. So I wasn't able to start it. The kid did a recording of the noise and said it is all coming from the front of the LH (drivers) valve cover. It is most noisey when first started. The recording sounds like every lifter in a OHV clacking. He also said that at idle the oil light comes on slightly. I checked through the oil fill and there is NO sludge- I mean it is clean in there. So he is going to have his dad talk to the service guys dad and see if he can get him back there. Apparently the service guy is a tech at BMW and diagnosed the noise as VANOS. Apparently this service tech comes over and services the whole families cars, mom's Audi 6 Q, dad's MB, sis MB SUV, and spoiled son's 04 RR. He appears to be middle eastern descent so I think there is some family dynamics at play with the service guy. I might go back and take a look at it if he gets it mobile-though I am getting very skeptical. I remember reading once about an after market supplier for the VANOS parts that solve that problem forever- any recall anyone?

Why this RR, are you getting it for free? Sounds like a huge headache in the waiting, and you know you can feel it! I will never understand why people talk themselves into buying a turd.
This can't be the only 2004 in Alberta. Or just buy it and let your next post be in Classified under 2004 RR FOR SALE.
Just my 2cents.
