RRC death wobble
Well I have been looking for the cause of my death wobble for several months now. I’ve looked at it and I have an independent and front end shop look for it with no luck.
So I decided that I would replace the flex coupling in the steering shaft, (easier said than done). Well while prying and pushing on the shaft I noticed that they upper u-joint (thru the fire wall) had some play (very little), so I figured no sense continuing with the flex coupling if I was going to have to take it apart to replace the u-joint, so I put it back together.
Unknown to me when I was re-assembling the old flex joint I assemble it with the wheel being off 90 degrees. So now the steering wheel center post is at 12 and 6 not at 3 and 9, like a bad alignment was done without centering the wheel. Not a big deal I will assemble it correctly when I install the u-joint, I thought.
Well now; the death wobble is 95% gone, by connecting the flex coupling off by 90 degrees it must put the stress on the other side of the u-joint. Now the wheel is tight no play and I have driven all the same roads that used to scare the crap out of me and not one wobble.
I got home and started looking up u-joints they are about $25-30 each plus the cost of the flex coupling, it turned out to be cheaper to get a complete replacement shaft from rovers north for $69.00. I also need a new steering stabilizer which I ordered and I’m sure once they are installed it will fix the problem completely.
If you have a death wobble it might want to check the u-joints on the steering shaft, or disconnect the flex joint, turn the wheel and reinstall it 90 degrees off center it is only 4 @ 13mm bolts, you might be as luckkly as i was.
The new shaft and stabilizer should be here anyday, I already feel 100% safer driving it.
