Default Is the Shark Fin Really Necessary?

Is the shark fin antenna really necessary? That is really the only design element that I don't care for. Why do they use it and not a **** or something a little more pleasing to the eye?

I know that it is going away in 2010 (or at least I believe so from the spy shots) but just curious what you guys think...

I'm not sure how many systems the shark fin actually serves, but I love on my 2001 how the AM/FM/WB is in the rear side glass. Then for my added on XM I have the micro antenna in the channel where the roof rack would go, so its hardly noticeable. I havnt seen any P38s with nav so I dunno where those guys got the sat. antenna....but either way I feel like Land Rover could have come up with a more inconspicuous design for the antennas.

RR is not alone either, my LS has it, A8, 7, S550 (although this looks more like an antenna now) but you don't see it on fords, GM's, etc.

The good thing about the Range Rover is that very few people see the roof since it towers over everything and everyone
