Default ($$? Safety?) Steering wheel shakes from 45-55 mph. Bushings will be checked.

Hello there. I am a long time fan of this forum and proud to say have never had a problem with my 1999 Discovery II (110,000 miles) until yesterday. The steering wheel shakes from 45-55 mph (but not above 55). I searched the forum and learned a great deal about what could possibly be causing this to occur.

Now that I have learned that I was way off with what I thought was going on initially (between llesra's help and pouring over this: http://www.roversnorth.com/store/c-508-steering.aspx). I just want to know if my jeep is safe to drive. I do not intend to ignore the problem, but if the mechanic has to locate the problem (I will ask him to start with checking the tire balance and the panhard rod bushings) and repair it I may not be able to take care of this for a few weeks. Would driving the car to work for a few weeks be a bad-bad-bad idea? Thanks for your help (will this be very expensive?)

Dang, now I can't even delete the pictures that prove I have a lot to learn about my jeep...

Default RE: Picture of broken rod that I think is causing my steering wheel to shake (need some help)

d2s have drag link attachment points on both wheels to accommodate left hand drive or right hand drive.

inspect the panhard rod bushings. those usually go bad and cause shakes.

I see, so the picture is normal. Assuming the bushings are causing the problem (is this what I have read about concerning fluid leaking and causing damage to them) how much will I have to spend to replace them? I am assuming this is not something a novice can do without the possibility of making the problem worse. Is my jeep safe to drive?

Once you inspect and replace the bad part and assuming you have no tire issues causing the problem, then buy and install a new OME steering stabilizer if you still have the factory one.

Not one to tangle with these experts - but I recommend you also inspect your universal joints forward of the transfer case. I encountered a wheel shimmy prior to replacing mine and the problem went away.

By the way, if these are the same as in the Series 1, there's a grease nipple on each U joint which should be lubricated periodically.
