'06 LR3 Stranded in Bozeman
My brother just GAVE us his 2006 LR3 HSE. My husband flew from CO to Seattle to pick it up and drive it back. It has 36,000 miles and just had new brakes and the 45,000 mile service done. DH drove from Seattle to Bozeman last night - no problem. This am when he got a mile out, a loud grinding noise started under the engine - when he accelerates. If he is in drive and pushing on brakes and gas - no noise. But when he accelerates, there is a grinding noise. 1) Does anyone have any idea what this could be. . . 2) Where should he go in Bozeman to find someone who could look at this? It is Sunday - and we know he'll have to stay another night there. Thanks y'all!
Needs to go up on a rack at a shop, inspect drive shaft(s), check fluid in transfer case and differentials and transmission - just as a start. They can also turn wheels by hand, which is part of the diagnostics, hard to do by yourself in the parking lot.
May be something as simple as transfer case lever on the console pushed out of position slightly.
With Rovers, grinding is always bad, and loud is even worse.
Oh, and welcome to the world of Rovers. I don't think we have the 06 tech manuals on line, but someone will probably correct me.

There is no "lever" on the transfer case of the LR3, it is electronic.
If the grinding is coming from under the engine that means it is the front differential, it is probably low on fluid, like they checked it at the shop for the 45k service and did not put the fill plug back in tight enough and it fell out while driving and all the fluid leaked out.
If that is the case the shop will cover the repair because it was their fault.
He needs to crawl under the front of the truck, find the fill plug hole and see if there is a plug in there, take a pic with his phone, call the shop first thing and have them send a tow truck.
Depending on which shop did the work if they used the wrong fluid type it will damage the differential too.
Depending on the options of the truck if it has a locking diff it takes a special fluid.

Thank you so much. So you saw that the husband is like 10 hours from where that maintenance was done right? I'm hoping when we call they'll help - just not sure. There isn't a LR dealer in Montana. So we're hoping to find someone to work on it Monday AM in this little town.
Hopefully I've uploaded these pics correctly. There are two bolts missing and a cover over most of the engine. No fluid anywhere.

Would call installing dealer and ask how they want to handle it. Would not drive around looking for a shop. If you have to deal with a local shop, ask if they have a contract wrecker, and if their electronic shop data manuals cover that year Land Rover. Based on grinding noises, most likely will need differential gears replaced. If mechanic wants you to just to flush metal parts out and refill with heavier oil you might be able to do a test drive. But driving home???
Also, pay with credit card, if possible, so you have 60 days to dispute if this repair does not work.

Hey Buzz. I got two email but only see one post. Did you amend your post where you showed the page of the manual? Thanks so much for your help. DH drove 10 hrs from Seattle to Bozeman - and has another 10 hr drive to Denver.
I did, because it is way older than what you have. But here it is, so you can see the theory of what may be the problem. Part #13 would be what is missing (but it will look different on the newer unit).
THIS is what the front diff on a LR3 looks like!!
2005-2009 LR3 Differential Assembly - Front
If it was serviced at a Land Rover dealer before you picked it up you MUST let them handle it however they want.
All of the work is under warranty ASSUMING they serviced the differentials.
Do you have paper work saying what was done?
Also keep in mind that you may want your brother to call and say that you are borrowing the truck, I am not sure if they will cover the work if it has a different owner.
Most warranty's are non-transferable.
Your husband has 2 choices, get his hands dirty to try and see what happened or just sit tight and call first thing in the morning.
