And if this indeed the problem, we are talking over $1000 probably when all is said and done. You can imagine dealer will want to scrutinize everything.

Well, don't reach for the Malox just yet, let the diagnosis come in. This is certainly a prime suspect, but there could be other issues, both large and small. The vehicle would go for $28K+ at a lot of dealers, so worth fixing. I am curious about noises while driving before the failure, but being new to you, good sound proofing, and radio turned up, might not have noticed any "whine" from the front end.

maybe your just focusing on the wrong part of the truck. i believe 45k service do not service differentials . maybe only tbox fluid i would have to check my sheets. i know you only service the rear differential sooner if its locking. It can possibly be that the GRINDING noise is just probably brake related since they just did the brakes as you say. maybe they didnt place the sliders correctly and is rubbing on the rotor now , i have seen this done before. possible parking brake cable rubbing on drive line, heat shield rubbing on drive line. dont over think things look for the obvious first dont let the people telling your its your front diff going out untile you verify its not a easy commen fix it your self noise

You did say this If he is in drive and pushing on brakes and gas - no noise;

and that is also a good fit for socalrovershop's pro suggestion. Differential would not make noise at low speed in parking lot, but brakes would, might also react differently if in reverse. Having someone stand by car they may be able to hear the noise coming from a particular wheel. Differential would whine from low fluid, and eventually lock up, more likely you would not have hit the exact point in time between grinding and locked up after 10 hour drive.

Now a brake issue could wear down in that kind of time. Unlikely that it is transfer case without fluid, it has a warning for over temperature.

All that said, would still ask dealer, and they may well suggest towing to a local brake shop. Certainly brakes are cheaper. They'll know when you get the truck off the ground and on a rack. Hopefully it is somethng simple, maybe that extra night of rest will make the remaing trip that much more enjoyable.

This is one Halloween you'll be glad if it is not the "pumpkin" - the slang term for the differential.

I would be looking at the front wheels. Is one more crooked than the other?
Could be a wheel bearing failure..
Any competent shop should be able to diagnose and repair this.
Accurate auto repair in Bozeman MT. looks like the only facility
capable of this feat. Here's the phone #(406) 586-0619

..aside from a few hiccups and farts the LR3 may have, they are a good solid vehicle.
and just like when you get a new pet, they usually s**t or **** on the new carpet you have when you get it home.. your new truck did it outside at least!
All will be fine

Relax and Enjoy life!

Thanks all. I have had a new puppy. . . My husband is actually at Auto Works this am. The diagnosis is the pinion bearing AND the front differential. Both need to be replaced. They're calling Boise for prices (obviously they don't have the parts) DH will have to rent a car or something to get home and go back and get it. Just awful. I'm scared of the quote we're going to get. We didn't BUY this car. . . we did set aside an emergency fund for the LR but it probably won't be enough!

these vehicle had a growl type noise that would come on at high speeds due to front differential pinion wear but it would not lock up. it shouldnt be a grinding noise. i still think you should get a different opinion.

With respect to funding, if title has been signed over to you there is considerable loan value for this vehicle; you may not want a car payment, but there are options from credit union, conventional bank, and even (!!!) title pawn.

I'm thinking more the growl too, but going back to the no noise when brakes and gas on, does the grinding noise stop as soon as brakes are applied, or does it only go away once truck comes to a stop? Of course, we are not there, did they find the drain plug for the differential missing? Or fluid contaminated / wrong type? What about installing dealer? We are not trying to pry, just interested.

If your hubby is going to rent a car and drive back home why not just rent a truck/trailer and tow the rover back home where it can be fixed at your leisure? Beats being put over a barrel somewhere out in the middle of nowhere by some shop that may not be familiar with Rovers.. I'm sure there are some competent rover owners in your area that would be more than happy to help you get things diagnosed and the rover on the mend..
