Default 1997 Disco won't start

I took my disco to my mechanic, as it was not passing the emissions test, after I had installed new plugs/wires & air filter. He said it may need the computer to be reset. So, I took it to him He put the car on his computer & that was the last time it started.

This was in May....it's now mid August & it sounds like he has given up. I believe he's been able to get fuel to the engine but no spark?

Any ideas?

Thanks
Paul

Sorry to say but your mechanic sucks when it comes to Rovers. Besides that it may need an ECU, not uncommon now that they're nearing 20 years old. Corrosion or electronic component failure. If your idiot mech can connect to the ECU then it's something else. No spark also points to the crank position sensor, it's the only one that makes sparks happen besides the ECU. What was it failing on the emissions test?

Hey,

thanks for the reply. It was failing on #3 cylinder or at least that was coming up on the report. I believe there were a couple of other small things too. All this happened in May.

It's now August, it's time up on your mechanic. If they can't figure it out within an hour or two they're not subject matter experts.

On #3 you might have an injector issue like stuck open/shut or needs cleaning or could be a coil connection or coil if plugs don't solve that. Has little to do with not sparking through all 8 though. Knock sensors pickup misfires, knock sensors adjust timing.

Need more info to get a good guess going but if you don't have the rig in your possession it's tough to play the game.

I'm going to try to get in there next week & ask some questions & maybe come back on here to see if it makes any sense.

Again, thanks for your help.

Ok, so it's September 5th, I finally got my car back from the first mechanic, (who has had the car since May 13th). I called and said I need to let someone else take a look at the car, as he had had no success in figuring out why it wouldn't start.

I had it towed to another Range Rover specialist, who after looking at it, refused to do any work on it, because of the mess the other mechanic had left the car in.

Do I have any legal recourse here?

It's now Sept 5th, I finally got my vehicle towed to another mechanic's shop (after waiting 3 weeks from my request to get my car back)

The new mechanic, after having a look at my car, refused to even attempt to perform a diagnostic test, as the previous mechanic had left the car in such a mess.

Do I have any legal recourse here, agains the 1st mechanic?

Both shops are Range Rover specialists.
