with the cheap acoustics i have here ... it sounds like a bearing knock, or piston slap , does it get louder when you rev the engine ?

what we would do is take off all the external belts on an engine , and then start the engine without the fan blowing the sound all over the place , you will be better able to hear where its coming from , ohh and you could get a piece of hose 3 ft or so ,and make a home made stethoscope to listen at the top and block area for the knock ... then we will then analyse the results ....

Yeah, it gets louder and more defined when the engine is reed or when I'm driving it. I'll try taking the belts off in order to get a clearer sound.
So, do both of these issues (bearing knock, or piston slap) - do they require yanking the engine out?

if its getting a lot louder ,its more leading to bearing knock , and yes you best pull the engine out and do a complete job on it ,,,,,, ,or replace the complete head and block ... ( will save some money )

but we heed to get to to exact problem first ... let me know what you hear and where ...

Could also be the dreaded loose liner which is engine out and rebuild time.
