Default 2004 Discovery Service Engine Light VS Check Engine

Hey there, I promise I tried searching the internet before asking this but I feel like I get conflicted information. This morning my "Service Engine Soon" light came on. It was a steady light as opposed to a blinking/flashing light (which I understand means don't drive etc).

I'm confused because I've read that it is simply a "service" light for regular maintenance things like oil etc. Some have said there is a Service light and an actual CHECK ENGINE light and they are 2 different lights/indicators. If so where would the check engine light appear?

I know I probably do need to have it checked at Autozone or some place but I was just looking for clarification on the Service Engine Soon/Check Engine light issue.

Can anyone help a girl out?

"SERVICE ENGINE SOON" is the same as "CHECK ENGINE". Different manufacturers use different indicators. Some even use a symbol of an engine. They all indicate that an emissions failure has been identified. And you are correct, if its flashing, its best not to drive.

Many Land Rovers do have a separate warning for "service", but it is usually a message on the display that says "Service Due" or "Service Now", however the Discovery II has no such message.

Thank you for clarifying that!! I'm anxious to find out the issue. The pesky 3 amigo lights have been coming on and off lately wondering if they play a part.

If thr temperature gauge needle moves beyond halfway on the gauge, your engine is overheating.
If that's happening, don't drive it. Let it cool off. Check the coolant level.

you really do need to read the check engine codes to see what's going on with the car. It's also critical to know what the engine operating temperature is.
