First test you should try...turn the key to the on position, enough that you get all the gauge lights to come on, but do not crank the truck. Then count to 10 with the key there, and on 10, try to start. If it cranks fine, then you've probably got a fuel pump problem.
As for your gas in the exhaust...try banging on your catalytic converter...if it rattles = [:@]
What kind of MPGs are you getting? Also when was your last tune up (spark plugs/wires)?

What shape are the plugs in, are you still running the original plug wires? If they are old and tired, replace the plugs and wires as well as replacing you cap and rotor with a new Rover only set.
For the wires if they are original replace them with a set of 8mm Magnecor wires. Replace your fuel filter and then you should be in good shape.
If you weren't smelling gas I would say a fuel pump was in order but I think a good tune up will fix you right up. When this is all
