Default 96 discovery...being weird...

soo, here is my issue with my 1996 landrover discovery...
since i got this beauty about 6 months ago and i have been having 2 weird problems.
#1--when i go between 55 and 70 it gets this terrible rattle...like the whole car shakes until i slow down. i have heard that it could be anywhere from a steering box issue to warped roters (thoughts on this?)
#2--when braking and coming to a stop (usually on a down hill) my engine and power steering will cut off...all the electrical components will stay working, but to get it to go i have to turn the car completely off and start it back up again.
would be nice to hear what you guys think the problem may be, i don't make alot of money and hard to find a shop that will work on my baby for cheap so i'd like to know what i'm looking for before i take it in.
thanks and have a beautiful day/night/whatever.

Well for the wobble if it shakes sorta hard its a death wobble. You most likely need a good alignment and if you have play in your steering wheel you need to replace that power steering box. Check all your linkages for movement. Also look into getting a bushing kit for you suspension components. They are most likely worn out and causing some mean vibrations.

As for it cutting out i would start small. Clean your idle air control valve. Do an induction cleaning. Mine did that when i bought mine and it was iacv. So try that first.

I second the "death wobble", any worn steering/suspension components can cause this upto and including the swivel ball pre-load.
Do a search for it.

Nobody has mentioned that it could be the tires. Could it be a balancing issue or maybe a separated tire? Saying that it only happens at certain speeds reminds me of what's going on with my truck right now.

Warped rotors usually show up more when brakes applied, but certainly you can have a sticky caliper. One diagnostic method is to use one of those handy infrared thermometers, drive truck, coast to a stop, hop out and measure temps of each rotor. Ones on each axle should be close. My sticky caliper made one rotor 40-50F hotter than others (depends on how much sticking).

It does not take much for the suspension to oscillate (death wobble), and it can multiple parts involved. Mine had bad tire, caliper, four rod ends, and wheel bearing involved.

My death wobble was the bolts on the steering box were very loose.

Put it up on stands, start pulling and pushing on the tires till you see whats moving around.

Good luck

John
