98 dicovery hard to start when cold
i am working on my daughters 98 disco w/ 4.0 & auto. the caris difficult to start when engine is cold. starts right up when warm. a couple other people have worked on this and no change. so i was ask to look at it.
first thing i did was tune it up. new plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, oil & filter. i also cleaned the throttle body did a seafoam decarbonize and replaced vacuum lines. the next day it still did not want to start. after a number of tries it finally does start and works all day if drivin throughout day.
so i checked the manifold pressure. sits around 16" at idle (might be a little low) and fuel pressure. fuel is at 18 to 20 psi.(i think it should be over 30) it does hold pressure steady when off so i think the injectors andcheck vavle are ok. i pinched the return line and there was no change in fuel pressure. so before i spent the money on a fuel pump is there anything else i can try.
also when i was changing the fuel filter i turned the key to check the fuel pump. it put out a lot of volume(did not have a gauge on it.)

it was the pump as expected. replaced and got 30 psi right away. car starts and runs well. rather than pay the $400 to $500 for new pump/sneding unit assembly i was able to adapt a pump for a 95 to 02 range rover into the disco 1 sending unit housing. ( i got the unit for 130 used.) fits perfectly with no mods just a simple pump swap. i spent alot of time looking forideas about replacing just the fuel pump and found none. so before you spend the money on a complete assembly for the 97 to 99 disco 1 know that you can be creative if you know what you looking for and can compare pictures online.
