Called to check price and availability for a couple of shocks for wifey's minivan. Store said they could have them next day from the warehouse. When I said I would check one more place, they said they could price match. I said "Rock Auto has the shock for $44 on line" and they said OK, they enter the number and as long as their system does not make the numbers "black out" they will sell for the reduced price. So $60 each became $44 each.

It pays to ask, all they can do is say no. May vary by store and brand. I imagine that corporate wants "turns" of inventory, even if margin is lower. It don't make money sitting on the shelf, it makes money when it goes out the door.....

 

Yup, I've had them do that numerous times. Even got hub bearings at cost a while back. It was a little more that RockAuto, maybe 50 cents per bearing, but since I refuse to ever shop at RockAuto again, it's worth it to me. Plus I usually order enough to get free shipping, if it's coming from the warehouse, so that's even better.

Even better than that, a couple years ago I was ordering 6 u-joints and they only had 4 in nearby stores, so the woman on the phone said they'd ship the other two with free shipping. When I said, "Great, works for me." she paused a min, then said, "If you want, I can just ship you all six even though it's technically not enough to qualify for free shipping. It'll save you having to run around."

In my experience their customer service beats the hell out of Rockauto's.

The guys at Advance Auto are not so cute, so I don't usually shop there.
