Default brake issue

hey all, own a 98 disco 1 with 185k on it. I have been having this problem for a while, but it is not constant. when I depress the brake pedal, the brakes will grind or not catch or something and i cant depress the pedal. the brakes dont work and i have to let my foot off and then repress the pedal harder to get the brakes to engage. it usually happens right after i start my car or when i am stopping in dirt or mud. after the car is run for a while, brakes work fine. doesnt always happen either, only sometimes. any thoughts? appreciate it greatly.

Are you getting an ABS or a brake warning light when this happens?

disco mike, i'm having the same problem with my 98 Disco. the brakes won't engage sometimes, typically right after i start the car. no ABS lights or warning lights light up.
what does happen, though, is that when the brakes do this you can hear a slight electrical buzzing sound. does this sound familiar at all?
