Default camshaft position sensor

hello everyone! i just purchased a 98 discovery the other day and now the check engine light has come on. i took it in to get the codes checked and this is what i came back with.

p1317 : camshaft position

p1158 : o2 sensor, says its running rich

so if the camshaft is slightly out of position would that cause the o2 sensor problem?

if anyone has had a similar problem or knows what i can do to fix the problem please help me out, i would greatly appreciate any advice!

The cam sensor is not the problem.
You need a complete tune up, plugs and wires.
Use good plug wires, Kingsbourne, Magnecore or STI adn any spark plug you want.
Once that is done reset the codes and see what ones come back if any.

the previous owner had just installed new plugs and plug wires, the wires are ngk and the plugs are champion, is it possible the wrong plug gap could cause the problem?

1317 is not a cam sensor issue but an ABS/rough road fault.
1158 is a rich run for both banks and could be 02's, an exhaust leak or vacuum leak.

NGK plug wires are junk, replace them, reset the codes, see what, if any, come back.

thanks for all your info guys! ill pull the o2's and see how they look, im pretty sure it doesnt have any exaust leak and i dont know how to do a vacuum leak test, so if its not the o2s ill just take it in. and i also found it could be the egr is stuck open or high fuel pressure any thoughts on it being either of those?

There is no EGR on these.
Its the plug wires.
Removing the O2's and looking at them will tell you nothing.

You have already "discovered" an important point. Generic code readers can come up with the code number, but consulting the shop manual is your best way to see what that code represents.
