Catalytic Converter Smoking
Dear all,
I have had an issue lately with what appears to be my catalytic converter smoking. In combination with the smoke produced there is also a smell that smells very burnt rubberish. No I do not have the rotten egg smell. The amount of smoke produced and the strength of the smell are all dependent on how hard and long the car has been driven. For example if I drive short distances there will be only a little smell and almost no smoke. But when I make long journeys on the highway, smoke is pouring off of it.
My check engine light is on, with codes P1174 and P1171. I have replaced the MAF, pre-converter O2's and the Intake manifold w/i the past year. I do feel a little bit of heat on the floor below my floor mats, but nothing too much and I do not seem to notice a difference between the passenger side and drivers side floor temps.
Although I have those 2 codes currently, about a month ago when I checked I had something regarding a faulty EVAP canister (cant remember what #) which did not show up today.
My O2 sensor voltage values on the drivers side post converter are bouncing up and down between .150 - .600 while the passenger side is pretty stable between .000-.150
Car has 107,000 Miles

Both of those are lean codes. You either have a vacuum leak somewhere. Check every vacuum hose and elbow for any cracks, also several members have had injector o-rings that were cracked and causing those codes. possible that running lean could really heat up those converters.
both O2 sensors should be fluctuating like the drivers side. Did you use Bosch 15175 O2 sensors. Many aftermarket ones have caused problems. Just sayin
