Default constant stalling

Hi – I have a 2001 Discovery with 120,000 miles on it. It has been incredibly reliable since I purchased it in 2003. A problem developed that my mechanic is having trouble resolving. Trying to get a code has been difficult because when I take it in, the check engine light is off. (He mentioned one code blip – it was 111, but he not positive about that-I’’d have to check with him) The problem: it just dies while driving. It might cough once, then the engine shuts off. I can restart it, but the check engine light goes on, dashboard flashes, and it runs real rough and will stall again. Then it won’t start for about 10 minutes, but runs rough for about a couple hundred yards when it starts and then dies. After a day’s rest, I can get about 5 miles out of it and the same exact cycle starts up again with the stalling and coughing and dashboard lights. He changed the mass air flow sensor because all indications led him to guess that might be it, but it wasn’t. My next move is to drive it back and forth on his block until the check engine light comes on and it acts up so he can scan it while it’s running when the problem is activated and hope he can properly diagnose it, unless anybody has any other suggestions? Many thanks in advance!
