Default Coolant Temperature Indication

I have a 1996 Range Rover 4.0 SE - coolant temperature gauge never comes off the peg - all wires seem to be connected to the sensor etc. Any ideas would be appreciated - thanks!!!

It has coolant in it right?
The only other thing is the temp sensor is bad.

Definitely has coolant - drives fine and seems to run cool - I just get nervous without temperature indication - I will pick up a sensor and give it a shot - thanks!

Rovers North - Land Rover Parts for Series, Defender, Range Rover, Discovery, LR2, LR3 and More has good diagrams on parts locations, find the part you need and it will show you where it goes.

I bought my coolant temp sensor at AutoZone, but I had to tell those idiots which one it was though.

UPDATE - replaced the single wire sensor and still have no coolant temperature indication. Noticed that the coolant temperature gauge needle comes off the peg when the key is turned on and moves to the bottom of the cold range - problem is that it never moves from there regardless of coolant temperature. Any other ideas would be appreciated - thanks!!! P.S. - wanted to add that i grounded out the single wire thinking that the coolant gauge should peg high - needle did not move - possible problem with gauge and.or wiring???

The sensor is negative coefficient. And will read low ohms for hot and high ohms for low temp. So a ground on the connector should make a high reading. If you have an OBDII port, a scanner will show better temp.
