Default Cooling System Problem Review - Chapter 4

Chapter 4 - Water pump

The same water pump is used on the D1 and D2 trucks. Over a period of time, it may fail in a variety of ways. It can leak out of the bleed hole on the pump, or gaskets can fail around the pump. If looking at the serpantine belt at idle there should be no wobble in the pump of fan clutch. Inside the pump tolerances are tight, and wobble eats metal. The pump moves about 2.5 gallons per minute at 1000 rpm. Poor quality coolant can increase wear on the pump. Replacement pumps can be OEM design or a newer aftermarket version with a larger bronze impeller. If replacing a water pump the fan clutch may fail soon after. They have been in a tight embrace at thousands of rpm for years of operation. A new pump changes that, and the old clutch can die from the subtle changes in balance. When changing a WP, lay out bolts as they have come out, some are various lengths.
